You design machines that move themselves through a real world that refuses to cooperate — where the floor is uneven and somebody left a bag in the way.

A day looks like

  • You watch your robot fall over in exactly the same spot for the ninth time.
  • You choose between a stronger motor and a lighter frame, and you cannot have both.
  • You take it outside and discover that sunlight blinds the camera.

  • The camera on a rig going somewhere a person should not — a pipe, a reactor, a wreck.

How you get there

  1. 01A degree in mechanical, electrical or software engineering — the field is a meeting point rather than one subject.
  2. 02Building something that moves, badly, is how most people find out they want this.
  3. 03Warehouses, farming, surgery, manufacturing and inspection hire far more of these engineers than research labs do.
  4. 04Apprenticeships into robotics technician roles exist and lead to the same teams by another door.
